" Alcohol Increases Cancer Risk in HRT Therapy"
November 7, 2005
A new study released by the Karolinska Institutet of Sweden has determined that women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) who regularly drink alcohol have an even elevated risk of developing breast cancer. The study was released on Tuesday and showed that while women who take HRT at an already higher risk group for developing breast cancer, women who drink while on HRT are at an even higher risk.
The increased breast cancer was the estrogen positive breast cancer, the most common form of breast cancer. The findings were published in the US Journal of the National Cancer Institute set to be published this Wednesday.
Since 2002, when the results of a controversial HRT study showed the hormone therapy to be directly linked to the development of several serious side effects such as breast cancer, many women have stopped taking the therapy to stem symptoms associated with menopause.
Professor Alicja Wolk, one of the study’s main participants, said the study collected data from 1987 to 1990 and then also in 1997. The study included the histories of over 51 thousand women and showed that 1,188 of them developed cases of breast cancer.
