" Risks of hormone replacement therapy still being weighed "
July 13, 2005
New evidence in recent years suggested the use of long-term combination hormone replacement therapy might be linked to heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. As a result, millions of women stopped taking the therapy afraid they were putting themselves at serious increased health risks.
The latest research appearing in today's Journal of the American Medical Association surveyed women who had stopped taking combination hormone replacement therapy when the health risk scare first broke. In the study, more than half of the older women who took combination hormone therapy for an average of almost six years suffered a recurrence of menopause symptoms when they stopped therapy.
Women who experienced symptom reoccurrence were mainly the women who suffered the most severe symptoms to begin with, meaning it was most likely they would have sought hormone replacement therapy to ease their symptoms anyway. Based on the study's results, the author believes combination therapy just delays symptoms and does not eliminate them. The study's author believes more research is needed to assess which dosage might be the most effective and to determine if tapering off the dosage would work better.
The study did reveal that many women in the study were able to successfully deal with their symptoms by making lifestyle changes, including drinking more fluids, starting or increasing exercise, practicing yoga, meditation or breathing exercises or using fans or air conditioners. Some women report getting relief from herbal and natural hormones, but so far studies indicating its benefits are limited.
Although hormone replacement therapy can be a way to effectively provide relief, current guidelines suggest hormones may only be beneficial if taken for moderate to severe symptoms of menopause and only at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. Women wondering about how to treat menopause symptoms should consult with their doctors to assess their risks and benefits of various treatment options.
