"New Study: Hormone Replacement Safety"

March 2, 2006
A new study shows by taking estrogen alone in hormone replacement therapy, the risks of some women suffering from heart attacks did not increase.

This may be good news to some women between the ages of 50 and 79 who had to make a choice to either stop HRT altogether in 2002 or risk serious problems by remaining on HRT.

In 2002, a Women’s Health Initiative study showed that women who took hormone replacement therapy had an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or breast cancer. This was an alarming enough fact to make many women stop HRT and live with the dramatic symptoms of menopause. Some, though, stayed on their HRT, risking the chance of heart attacks.

Now, with the most recent analysis of the Women’s Health Initiative data, doctors are saying that those who took estrogen alone did not show an increase risk of heart attacks. According to the findings, estrogen did not do any harm to the women taking the drug. The combination HRT therapy is still considered high risk for the development of these diseases, though.

The new WHI findings show that estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy probably will not harm women, but it also may not help them either.
