" Specific Hormones may be at Fault in HRT Risks"
November 21, 2005
Recent data suggests that some hormone replacement therapies may be more damaging to women than others, and those women experiencing menopausal symptoms may take these less-damaging hormones more often than previously thought.
Hormone replacement therapy took a turn for the worse in 2002 with the data released from the Women’s Health Initiative study that showed that HRT actually increased the risks for breast cancer, strokes and other health problems. Millions of women stopped taking HRT for their menopausal symptoms as a result of the released data.
A study conducted on the same women a year after stopping HRT found that the majority had severe menopausal symptoms. These women suffered from hot flashes, pain, stiffness, fatigue and sleep deprivation. Women who had them before taking HRT usually experienced the symptoms.
Newer hormone treatments being tested include so-called bio-identical hormones, hormones derived from other sources than medications like Premarin and Prempro. But these bio-identical hormones are also potentially dangerous because they aren’t as regulated and may cause the same increase in cancer and stroke risk.
Doctors and others in the scientific community are working to determine if there are safe hormones versus unsafe ones to take in order to stem menopausal symptoms. Natural hormones like estradiol and plant source progesterones may not be as harmful as the more typically used hormones. Estrogen is from horse urine another commonly used hormone – medroxyprogesterone - is synthetically created progesterone.
