" Battle Heats Up Over Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy"
June 23, 2006
In the battle over hormone replacement therapy, the makers of drugs like Premarin and Prempro are now pitted against compounders of bio-identical hormones. The FDA has been asked to step as the referee and federal legislators are grappling with a review of the rules.
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy - touted as a safer and more effective alternative to drugs like Prempro and Premarin – has become increasingly popular since the Women’s Health Initiative discovered serious side effects associated with standard hormone replacement therapy.
Drugs like Premarin and Prempro have been linked to an increase in breast cancer, blood clots, and other life-threatening side effects. At least 4,500 lawsuits have been filed in personal injury cases against the makers of Premarin and Prempro on behalf of women seriously injured by these drugs.
In May, the FDA reported that Wyeth’s Prempro manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico suffered from lapses in quality.
With bio-identical hormones becoming increasingly popular, perspectives are polarized. Some people believe that bio-identical treatments are more natural and safer than prescription-drug hormone replacement therapy. Others are worried that bio-identical medications have not been adequately studied and could pose unknown risks to patients.
The FDA is currently reviewing a petition from Wyeth, which has the potential to change the compounding industry. Members of Congress are also considering these issues to determine if legislation is necessary to protect patients from potentially risky compounding products.
