"HRT Increases Breast Cancer Risk"
October 3, 2005
According to a medical study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute women who use hormone replacement therapy for up to two years may develop increased mammographic breast density. This hormone replacement therapy side effect can make detection of breast cancer more difficult during mammography screening. It can also increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.
Researchers at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center studied data from 413 women who took part in the Women's Health Initiative, a study of 16,000 women with menopausal symptoms who received hormone replacement therapy or a placebo. The Women's Health Initiative discovered that women who received the hormone replacement therapy were more likely than those taking the placebo to be diagnosed with breast cancer. These participants were also more likely to be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Women taking hormone replacement therapy were also more likely to receive abnormal results from a mammogram.
The Seattle study indicates that hormone replacement therapy can cause a six percent increase in mammographic density after one year, versus a one percent increase in the placebo group.
In defense of the seemingly dangerous mix of estrogen and progestin in hormone replacement therapy, a manufacture of the drug, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, argues "While the study shows an increase in mammographic density in participants on estrogen plus progestin therapy, it is unclear from the study and others whether changes in mammographic density are an actual marker of increased breast cancer risk or simply an interesting biologic effect."
For many medical experts, these findings point to the former.
