"HRT Linked to Breast Cancer"
Feb 26 , 2008
A new study reveals that women who have taken combined hormone therapy for five years or more are at a higher risk of having abnormal mammograms and breast biopsies.
The new study is featured in this month’s issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
Women Warned About HRT Use
Researchers say that women should be cautious when engaging in hormone therapy since new studies have linked it to an increased chance of breast cancer.
“It’s a risk of possibly having abnormal mammograms and really being tortured by them,” explains Dr. Kristin Byrne, the chief of breast imaging at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “It’s a whole slew of things they need to be aware of before making a decision to go on hormone therapy.”
Many doctors suggest that if women want to begin therapy, they must first consider whether or not they are prepared for the side effects that may result.
Study Conducted on HRT
The landmark Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) recently conducted a study which concluded that when combined, estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can increase the chances of breast cancer in women.
Researchers reportedly analyzed 16, 608 women in their study.
Some of which were given hormone replacement therapy, while others were given a placebo.
The study revealed that 25 of the women were forced to endure breast biopsies after taking the hormone therapy for five years.
