"Rate of Breast Cancer Drops With Decline in HRT Use"

December, 2006
The number of breast cancer cases between August 2002 and December 2003 dropped a surprising 15 percent, researchers announced last week. The reason behind this decline could be that millions of American women discontinued the use of hormone replacement therapy during that time after a large study found that these drugs increase the risk of breast cancer.

The new study, conducted by researchers at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas was based on data from the National Cancer Institute on the incidence of cancer.

While investigators say further research is needed to confirm the results of their study, they believe their hormone therapy hypothesis explains the findings perfectly.

According to lead researcher of the analysis Donald Berry, the association between the drop in breast cancer rates and HRT use was “astounding.”

“It’s a big deal…amazing, really,” said another researcher Dr. Rowan Chlebowski. “It’s better than a cure” because these cancer cases never even occurred.

Other Study Findings

Overall, the analysis found that the incidence of breast cancer—one of the leading causes of death in women—declined by seven percent in 2003 (14,000 cases). This is the first time since 1945 that the rate of breast cancer has significantly dropped.

However, the drop was more astounding for women with estrogen-positive tumors, a type of breast cancer that accounts for 70 percent of all cases.

Furthermore, the largest group affected by the reduced rate of cancer were women between 50 to 69-years-old—the most likely candidates to be taking hormone therapy drugs for the symptoms of menopause. The incidence of breast cancer for these women fell 12 percent in 2003.

Dangers of HRT

In 2002, a large clinical study called the Women’s Health Initiative—which looked at the adverse events of menopause drugs—found that women using hormone therapy faced a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

In addition, HRT drugs have been linked to numerous other serious side effects such as ovarian cancer, blood clots, heart attach, stroke, dementia, hearing loss, and more.
