"Breast Cancer Survivors Blame HRT"

February 7 , 2006
Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of breast cancer survivors who claim that hormone replacement drugs caused their breast cancer. The first of 5,000 cases is set to begin in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Helen Rush and Linda Reeves are only two of the thousands of breast cancer survivors who have sued Wyeth, Pfizer, and other hormone drug manufacturers due to hormone replacement therapy side effects. Both women allege the combination of estrogen/progesterone replacement drugs caused their breast cancer. In 1989, Rush began taking the hormone replacement therapy drugs and stopped in 1999, after she was diagnosed with having breast cancer.

The dangers of hormone replacement therapy became national news in July of 2002 when the National Institutes of Health halted the Women's Health Initiative, a major health study of 16,608 women. The study showed that a group of women taking hormone replacement therapy showed a 26% increased risk of breast cancer; a 22% increased risk of heart disease; a 29% increased risk of heart attack and a 41% increased risk of stroke, when compared with the control group.

"Our position is clear," said the personal injury lawyers representing the plaintiff. "For a long time, the makers twisted the science and suppressed the evidence of the true extent of the risks of these drugs while vastly overplaying the benefits."

Before the Women's Health Initiative results were released, Wyeth's Prempro was one of the top-selling drugs in the United States with over one billion dollars in annual sales. According to the personal injury attorneys representing the plaintiff, Wyeth marketed Prempro as something that doctors needed to prescribe to women to be on for life. This suggestion was made without any long-term testing done, which would have most likely showed a high risk of breast cancer with long-term use.

The claim was also made that Wyeth marketed this drug as having heart protective benefits when it did not. The FDA did not approve the drug Prempro for having this benefit, making it illegal to promote this off-label claim.

The serious side effects of Prempro may actually have a greater adverse effect on consumers than did the drug Vioxx, even though the Vioxx lawsuits have gained more attention.

As with the Vioxx cases, many Prempro and other hormone replacement therapy lawsuits are being handled in consolidated proceedings in the Multi-District Litigation.
