"Hormone Replacement Therapy Raises Ovarian Cancer Risk"
October 4 , 2006
The results of a new study reveals that long-term use of hormone replacement therapy drugs in postmenopausal women heightens the risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Researchers found that, among a sample of nearly 100,000 women between the ages of 50 to 71, those who have had a hysterectomy and used estrogen-only HRT drugs for more than 10 years had almost two times an increased risk of ovarian cancer than those who never took HRT.
Furthermore, the study concluded that women who had never undergone a hysterectomy, but took estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy consistently for more than five years also had an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, compared to those who didn’t take HRT.
“We’ve seen a growing body of evidence linking unopposed estrogen and estrogen-plus-progestin to an increased risk of ovarian cancer,” said James V. Lacey Jr., study author and epidemiologist with the National cancer Institute. “There are still some outstanding questions, but this adds more data that there is a slightly increased risk of ovarian cancer among women who used [this] hormone therapy for long durations.”
Serious questions and concerns were initially raised about HRT in the 1990s after the Women’s Initiative Study involving 27,000 participants was halted after the drugs were found to significantly increase the risk of breast cancer and stroke. Further studies have linked hormone therapy to even more serious side effects such as blood clots, heart attack, hearing loss, dementia, and death.
