" New Study Links Estrogen to Breast Cancer"
May 9, 2006
A new study indicates that estrogen-only therapy nearly doubles the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy and used this form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for more than fifteen years. Researchers say that women taking or considering long-term estrogen use should carefully weigh the risks and benefits with their doctor before making any treatment decisions.
The study, published 8 May 2006 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that using estrogen-only HRT therapy for 20 years or more increased the risk of all types of breast cancer by 42 percent. The study showed, however, the risk of hormone-sensitive types of breast cancer increased by 48 percent when using estrogen-only for only fifteen years.
The lead author of this study, Dr. Wendy Y Chen, notes that estrogen poses the risk of cancer only with prolonged use. Experts believe the adverse effects of estrogen are cumulative.
The current recommendation on all hormone replacement therapies is use of the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed.
Women using estrogen-only therapy for more than 15 years are urged to seek annual
mammograms and speak to their doctor about the risks of prolonged HRT drug treatment.
If you are concerned about the risk of cancer with HRT therapy, it is important to speak with your doctor to learn more. If you have developed a serious hormone replacement therapy side effect, you may wish to contact a qualified attorney for more information on your legal rights and options.
