"Hormone Therapy Linked to Hearing Problems"
Sept 6 , 2006
A new study reported in this week’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that postmenopausal women who use hormone replacement therapy containing progestin have a greater risk of suffering hearing damage compared to those not taking hormone therapy or those on estrogen-only treatments.
A team of researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York studied 124 postmenopausal women in three groups: those taking combination hormone therapy, those taking estrogen only, and those not taking hormone replacement therapy.
They found that those on an estrogen therapy containing progestin had poorer speech comprehension compared to the other two groups.
This team had previously reported a connection between hormone replacement therapy and hearing loss. However, this study specifically links this health effect to progestin.
Dr. Robert D. Frisina, the lead researcher who conducted this study, says that women who take hormone therapy should get their hearing tested more frequently, particularly those who already have hearing loss.
He notes that hearing loss is a serious health effect because it can have a significant effect on one’s quality of life. He feels this should be added to the list of hormone replacement side effects.
