" Herbal Alternative to HRT"
June 2, 2006
An herbal remedy can offer a natural relief for women going through menopause. In the wake of controversy surrounding hormone replacement therapy, which has been linked to breast cancer, a new study found that women who take a mixture of black cohosh and St. John’s wort extract suffered half as many hot flashes and were 42 percent less likely to feel depressed than those who took a placebo.
The study, published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, evaluated 301 patients who had experienced symptoms of menopause and menopausal depression for at least three months. About half the women in the study were given one milligram of black cohosh extract and .25 milligrams of St. John’s wort extract two times a day for eight weeks, then once a day for an additional eight weeks.
According to Los Angeles naturopathic physician Dr. Lesa Werner, “black cohosh is very effective in reducing hot flashes.
However, experts warn that some studies have indicated that using black cohosh could aggravate the spreading of breast cancer in women who already have cancer. Werner said that black cohosh should be used cautiously.
The study also found that St. John’s wort extract can help in the treatment of mild to moderate depression that may be seen in menopausal women.
Experts recommend consulting with your physician before taking any herbal medication to prevent the risk of dangerous drug interactions.
