" HRT Linked to Urinary Incontinence "
November 14, 2005
A new study from the University of California, San Francisco shows that women who are taking estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy have an elevated risk of urge and stress incontinence. Stress incontinence is an involuntary loss of urine when some physical activity occurs, such as coughing sneezing, laughing or exercising. Urge incontinence involves a strong urgent need to urinate after a bladder contraction and also usually involves an involuntary loss of urine.
The study published in the November issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology states that women who are considering HRT therapy to stem symptoms of menopause should be informed of the findings.
Over 40 percent of postmenopausal women have some form of urinary incontinence. The study, named the HERS (Heart Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study) study, found that 64 percent of HRT patients had incontinence. The difference was statistically profound and showed an obvious marked difference.
In addition to causing urinary incontinence, HRT treatments have also been linked to an increase in heart problems and breast cancer.
