"Study: HRT Effects Related to Menopausal Onset & Age"
January 20 , 2006
A new study suggests that the timing of menopause and a woman's age are critical determining factors in the effects of hormone replacement therapy. This study, published in the Journal of Women's Health, indicates that the benefits and risks of HRT may be related to the start of HRT therapy in relation to the onset of menopause and the patient's age.
Hormone replacement therapy has been an extremely controversial approach to the treatment of menopause. HRT is intended to reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats. Studies, including the one conducted by the Women's Health Initiative, have suggested that HRT therapy can actually increase a woman's risk of developing serious side effects, including various cancers, blood clots, gallbladder disease, heart attack, stroke, and more. Other studies have found that HRT protects women from coronary heart disease.
The Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital researchers who conducted the recent HRT and Coronary Heart Disease study found that the timing of treatment plays a big role in the risks and benefits associated with HRT. Women who began taking HRT shortly after the onset of menopause received some degree of protection from coronary heart disease, while women who started HRT ten or more years after menopause received no benefit at all.
One medical expert reports, "This important study helps address the complexity of the hormone therapy controversy, and fills in another piece of the puzzle." She adds, "The issue of timing in treatment with hormone therapy is clearly a factor which must be considered in weighing potential benefits."
