"First Prempro Trial Begins"

Aug 25 , 2006

Over five thousand lawsuits have been filed against Wyeth, the manufacturer of Prempro hormone replacement therapy, on behalf of women who have allegedly suffered serious side effects caused by this medication.

The first hormone replacement therapy lawsuit began this week in Little Rock, Arkansas. The plaintiff, Linda Reeves, took Prempro for eight years before she was diagnosed with breast cancer, a condition she argues was caused by hormone replacement therapy side effects. She is seeking a judgment that could result in an over $1 million award.

The judge told jurors, nine female and three male, that the Prempro lawsuit is expected to last two to three weeks.

According to the Prempro lawsuit, Wyeth knew that Prempro posed an increased risk of breast cancer before the publication of the Women’s Health Initiative study but failed to warn consumers. Sales representatives from Wyeth are expected to testify that the company instructed them to downplay hormone replacement therapy side effects risks.

The Women’s Health Initiative study, which was released in 2002, indicates that women taking hormone replacement therapy have a 27 percent increased risk of developing invasive breast cancer or other life-threatening side effects. The plaintiff’s attorneys argue that Wyeth should have conducted hormone replacement therapy breast cancer research as early as 1983.

Had the company done so, Ms. Reeves may never have taken Prempro or would have at least been on a lower dose for a shorter time, thus significantly minimizing her risks.

Over six million women took Prempro before the Women’s Health Initiative was released. Had the company responsibly researched and disclosed the possible hormone replacement side effects posed by Prempro, they could have saved countless women from serious ad deadly health problems.
