"First Trial Over Hormone Replacement Therapy to Begin"
Aug 4 , 2006
Major pharmaceutical company Wyeth will face its first trial next month over its estrogen-progestin combination hormone replacement therapy drug that has been linked to breast cancer.
Linda Reeves, 67, took Prempo, Wyeth’s HRT drug, for years to relieve symptoms of menopause. In 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer she claims was caused by the drug.
Reeves will go head to head with Wyeth in federal court in the first of about 4,500 product liability lawsuits—filed against the drug manufacturer over Prempro—that stemmed from research linking HRT to breast cancer.
In 2002, a study conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative found that patients taking Prempro or similar estrogen-progestin combination drugs have two times the risk of developing breast cancer, coronary heart disease, or stroke.
Reeves’ lawyers argue that Wyeth was aware of the dangers of HRT, but willfully ignored the risks in an effort to increase profits. Furthermore, attorneys allege that the drug company recklessly promoted Prempro by urging sales representatives to downplay the side effects while promoting the drug for unapproved uses like Alzheimer’s prevention and cardiovascular health.
“They [Wyeth] wanted doctors to look at the benefits and not the risks. They corrupted the science,” said James A. Morris Jr., one of Reeves’ attorneys.
