" Trial Dates Set For HRT Cases"
February 24 , 2006
The trial dates for two Hormone Replacement cases have been set in Little Rock, Arkansas. The cases, against Pfizer and Wyeth, are alleging that the HRT medications that they manufactured and marketed caused the plaintiffs to develop breast cancer.
HRT had been around since the early 1940s. Many women took estrogen to counteract many of the temporary discomforts of menopause. HRT had been a widely accepted form of therapy for women. In recent investigations it was discovered that long-term use of HRT raises the risk of breast cancer by 17 percent.
In July of 2005, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reclassified HRT from being "possibly carcinogenic" to "carcinogenic."
The first two lawsuits were selected from 3,500 other pending cases against the manufacturers of HRT medications. The diseases that many patients of HRT suffered from included heart disease and breast cancer.
The two cases that have been selected to go to trial in Arkansas have been scheduled for July 31 and October 10.
