" Survival Rate of Lung Cancer Victims Worsened with HRT"

January 3 , 2006
A recent study reveals that women with lung cancer have a lower survival rate if they are taking hormone replacement drugs. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology , watched some 498 women, all with lung cancer and some using postmenopausal hormone therapy for 6 weeks or more before their lung cancer was diagnosed.

The study discovered that women had a higher chance of lung cancer earlier than other women and a worse survival rate for all women with lung cancer.

The study comes at a time when hormone replacement therapy has seen an increase in criticism because of the therapy's link with serious health risks such as breast cancer and other adverse side effects. The lung cancer study showed that women who were on HRT had a much shorter survival rate than women in the study who were not on HRT.

Speculation exists as to the causal link between hormone replacement therapy and cancers, now including lung cancer. The therapies rely on an increased dose of estrogen, which in turn causes the development and growth of several types of potentially cancerous cells in the body.

While studies in the past found no causal link between HRT and the development of lung cancer, there were none that studied the relationship between cancer survival rates and HRT. The new study suggests that there is a link between the rate of survival and women who have had HRT.

The conclusion of the study by its researchers stated that HRT actually shortens the life of women who have lung cancer. The median survival was 39 months for HRT patients and 79 months in non-HRT patients. The rate of survival was particularly poor for women who smoked, received HRT, and had lung cancer.

Though the results are still being investigated and further studies are needed, they point toward a growing problem for women who have had hormone replacement therapy.
