" New "Natural" Hormone Drugs May be Just as Dangerous as HRT"

October 31, 2005

The FDA and other medical health officials are warning that new hormone replacement therapies called "bioidentical hormones" contain the same hormones that cause serious health risks such as increased breast cancer risk with long-term use. Hormone replacement therapy was seen as helping relieve symptoms of menopause but was also discovered to pose serious health risks in women.

The newer bioidentical hormones are actually a compounded formula created by pharmacists that contain plant-derived hormones, rather than animal derived ones. Since they are made in such a way to avoid FDA regulatory laws, the new drugs are touted as being more natural and less dangerous than traditional hormone replacement therapy.

Since the drugs contain the exact hormones of estrogen and progestogen they are not any safer than traditional hormone replacement therapy. The bioidentical hormones are also not required to carry the warning labels that other HRT drugs do since they are unregulated by the FDA.

The FDA has received letters, evidence, and a petition this month from the drug company Wyeth, posted on the FDA's website, about alleged and illegal claims that pharmacists were making about bioidentical hormones. The FDA has begun looking into the matter.

There are also concerns about the quality of the drugs, which, since they are unregulated, may contain ingredients that can further cause damage to those taking them. A study done in 2001 by the FDA found that 34 percent of compounding pharmacies failed some type of quality inspection.

No long-term study of bioidentical hormone therapy has been conducted to see if they are any different from traditional hormone replacement therapies.
