"New Study Differentiates Characteristics of Cancer in HRT Users"
Dec 7 , 2006
A new analysis of the Million Women Study has found that tumors in women who use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drugs are bigger and more prone to spreading past the breast than patients who do not take HRT.
Researchers in the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) evaluated the characteristics of invasive breast cancer in HRT and non-HRT users to determine the differences.
While it is widely known that hormone replacement therapy drugs—used to relieve symptoms of menopause—significantly increase the risk of breast cancer, the size of the tumors and invasiveness have never been concluded.
The study found that the average size of a tumor in a woman who used HRT was significantly larger than those who did not. Furthermore, the lymphovascular invasion of the tumors was in higher proportions.
“Tumors in HRT users compared to non-users are larger and more likely to have spread beyond the breast, and these differences are largely explained by differences in the mode of detections,” said researcher Toral Gathani, MRCS.
According to researchers, HRT drugs cause a decrease in the sensitivity and specificity of mammograms, making it difficult to quickly detect cancer before it has grown or spread.
