"Wyeth Sued over Prempro Once Again"
January 24, 2007
Wyeth faces yet another lawsuit over its hormone replacement therapy drug, Prempro.
According to the lawyer of a Little Rock woman who is suing the company, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was “making up facts and causing confusion” about the risk of breast cancer associated with the use of Prempro.
Not the First Lawsuit Against Wyeth
Helene Rush's case is the second in Arkansas federal court, and the third one in the country accusing Wyeth of negligence related to Prempro. More than 5,000 similar lawsuits have been filed across the country.
A married couple was awarded $1.5 million by a jury in a similar case, but a judge later declared that trial a mistrial.
Prempro is a combination of progestin and estrogen, but Wyeth also makes Premarin, which contains only estrogen.
Rush discovered that she had breast cancer in 1999. According to her attorneys, she took Prempro for nearly 10 years.
“Wyeth made up benefits, none of which were proven, to get doctors to prescribe the drug more,” said Les Weisbrod, attorney. Weisbrod added that Rush was told that the drug would improve her cardiovascular health.
Thousands of women across the country stopped taking Prempro when a federal study, the Women's Health Initiative, found in July 2002 that women taking hormone replacement therapy with estrogen and progestin were developing more heart problems and breast cancer.
“Wyeth's way of business is to sell first and test later for safety,” said Weisbrod.
