Six
Million American Women Could be Adversely Affected by Hormone
Replacement & Estrogen Replacement Therapy
The nation's largest study involving 16,000 women
has come to an abrupt end prior to its intended 2005 finish
date when new data showed hormone replacement therapy, the
use of estrogen and progestin, increases the risk
of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.
The trial was the first and only large study comparing the
effects of hormone replacement and estrogen replacement therapy with placebos in healthy
women. The Women's Health Initiative study results were released
early because of the impact of the results that could affect
the six million American women on hormone replacement therapy.
Up until the results of the study were released, medical
authorities were telling doctors to encourage almost every
single woman that had not had a hysterectomy to start taking
hormone replacement therapy when reaching menopause. The estrogen-progestin
combination had been a common prescription for decades leaving
many questioning how it took so long for long-term hormone
replacement therapy side effects to be discovered.

Women
With Increased Risk of Hormone Replacement Therapy Side Effects
Women with the following conditions are especially at risk
for suffering serious hormone replacement therapy side
effects:
- Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause
- Chronic disease of the liver
- History of breast cancer
- History of uterus cancer
- History of blood clots in the veins, legs, or lung

Alternatives
Due to the now well-known knowledge of the serious hormone
replacement therapy side effects, post-menopausal women everywhere
are wondering what alternatives are available to treat their
menopausal side effects. Women should visit their doctors

HORMONE REPLACEMENT & ESTROGEN
REPLACEMENT THERAPY ALERT!!
The medical world was shocked when a major clinical study
involving over 16,000 women came to a halt after five years
because of the risks
of heart disease, breast cancer, strokes, and blood clots
found to occur. The study was intended to continue until 2005,
but on May 31, 2002, the decision to end the study was decided
by an expert panel. There were 6 million American women taking
hormone replacement therapy at the time the study was released.
The women participating in the study were sent letters telling
them to stop the drugs.
Hormone replacement therapy had been a common prescription
for women who had not had a hysterectomy to take when reaching
menopause for decades, and the results of the study came as
such a surprise to medical experts many doctors did not know
what to tell their patients and they removed their phones
from the hook when their phone lines became flooded with concerned
women.

Estrogen-Progestin Combination Carries Significant Risks
Hormone replacement and estrogen replacement therapy, that
uses an estrogen-progestin combination, have been shown to
increase women's risk of heart attack by 29%, stroke by 41%,
and the chances of breast cancer by 26%.

Number of Women Affected
There were an estimated 38% of women past menopause taking
hormone replacement therapy when the announcement of the study's
data was released, with around 70 million prescriptions written
every year. In one year's time, for every 10,000 women who
take estrogen-progestin combination, there will be eight more
breast
cancers, eight more strokes,
and seven more heart
attacks. Due to the millions of women that take the hormone
replacement therapy the number of illnesses quickly add up.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
Study Halted
The Women's Health Initiative hormone replacement therapy
study began after congresswomen and women's groups were criticizing
the lack of attention women's health issues receive. The trial
was the first and only large study comparing the effects
of hormone replacement therapy with placebos in healthy
women. After five years of the eight-year study, the trial
was stopped because it was considered unethical to continue
giving the women the estrogen-progestin hormones because of
the serious
risks.
